In the last week, we were lucky enough to have been mentioned on two reputable sites, Latino Politics Blog and Business News Daily.

The article within Latino Politics Blog touches on gentrification in the Logan Square neighborhood of Northwest Chicago from the perspective of Edwin Romero, a life-long Logan Square resident.

Business News Daily discusses how it feels to be open on Christmas day, along with the ups and downs of doing so. Seeing as El Condor is open on Christmas, it seemed appropriate to be included.

Cuy as a Food and a Friend

In the States guinea pigs are seen more as pets and domesticated creatures than anything else. However, you’ll find that it’s not uncommon in regions along the Andes mountains to view them as delicacies.

Traditionally, the furry creature was solely prepared during ceremonial occasions. Since then, its consumption has become less of a social taboo and has even made its way through to certain areas of the U.S.

As far as preparations go, it can be prepared in a variety of ways, however, more often than not, its head is usually kept attached.

A few side notes on the mighty Cuy

Peruvians, alone, consume an estimated 65 million guinea pigs each year
It has been said they taste like rabbit
Their meat is high in protein and low in fat
Their domestication dates back to 2,000 B.C
They are quite good swimmers

El Condor is a quaint little shop that offers goods found in Ecuador and Peru right here in Chicago! We welcome you to take a look at our site, but even more so, we welcome you to read along with our blog for the neat little tid bits we’d like to share.

First little tidbit:

According to the Republic of Ecuador official, Dr. Sebastián Lecaro, as of 2011, Chicago is home to some 150,000 Ecuadorians, with many being located in the Northwest side of the city (El Condor is located in Logan Square!).
